Weekly summary

We had an amazing opportunity this week to have a lady who works at Sherwin Wiliams come and give us a lecture about color. She gave us many good tips and tricks on color and how it is used in interiors. One of the things we talked about is the language of color and what color can make you feel.
  • Red= excited, dramatic, draws attention, powerful, warm, stimulating
  • Blue= trustworthy, dependable, committed, tranquil, peaceful, cooling
  • yellow= most visible color, optimistic, enlightenment, happiness, careful
  • Green= peaceful, tranquil, secure, flexible, growth
  • Orange= flamboyant, brilliant, bold, joyful, interactive
  • purple= uplifting, regal, respected, humble, richness
  • Black authoritative, powerful, mysterious, luxurious
  • Brown=stabity, earth, approachable, organic, rotted
  • white= purity, cleanliness, neutrality, fresh, serial, wisdom
We also learned things like the difference between flat, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss and when it is good to use each type of paint. Also, what goes into a can of paint and what each of the elements is used for.
Here is an example of when you want to use certain colors in certain places:

Reading notes
Chapter 6-9 color studies
  • The first dimension of color is hue.
  • Mixing of hues
    • red+yellow=orange
    • yellow+blue=green
    • blue+red=violet
  • When you mix colors you should not be able to tell what was the primary parent "hue".
  • Hues can be mixed in three different ways
    • mixtures of primaries to make variations of a secondary
    • mixtures of two adjacent colors to make variations of a tertiary
    • mixtures of two complimentary colors
  • Broken hue is a combination of unequal proportion of the primaries
  • Broken hues found in nature are known as earth colors.
  • Changes in the appearance of an object's hue caused by the color of another object that is reflected onto it are called reflected colors.
  • Primary hues attract the eye; they are the most stable and have the greatest contrast.
  • The middle of the scale will be a gray between white and black known as middle-value gray.
  • Black, white, and grey are almost impossible to find in nature.
  • The effect obtained when the value of a hue is opposite to its natural order is called discord.
  • Large areas done in light discord are called pastels.
  • Light discords also provide the best highlights.
  • Chiaroscuro is the traditional form of shading that relies on systematic changes in value resulting in highlight, light, shadow, core of shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow.
  • Putting a light hue and dark hue next to each other is called toning
Chapter 4 Sketching Interiors
  • When drawing in black and white, change the relative hue to black, white, and gray.
  • Highlight: the brightest light
  • Cast Shadow: the object blocks light rays, causing the darkest shadow
  • Crest Shadow: the shadow on the surface of a rounded object
  • Reflected Light: light reflected back on an object
  • Crosshatching is a fundamental technique for sketching
  • An important technique of drawing is to use a surface to define an object instead of a line
  • Leave white on the paper in areas of reflections, it makes the drawing look more alive
